## **Where can I download the Monero wallet?**

There are multiple Monero wallets for a wide range of devices at your disposal. Check the table below for details and download links. **Attention:** for extra security make sure to calculate and compare the `checksum` of your downloaded files when possible.

**Please note the following usage of the labels:**

⚠️ – Relatively new and/or beta. Use wallet with caution.

## **How long does it take for my balance to unlock?**

Your balance is unlocked after 10 confirmations (which means 10 mined blocks). A block is mined approximately every two minutes on the Monero network, so that would be around 20 minutes.

## **How can I prove that I sent a payment?**

The fastest and most direct way is by using the [ExploreMonero](https://www.exploremonero.com/receipt) blockchain explorer. You will need to recover the transaction key from your wallet ([complete guide](https://getmonero.org/resources/user-guides/prove-payment.html) for GUI / CLI).

## **How do I buy Monero (XMR) with Bitcoin (BTC)?**

There are dozens of exchanges that trade Monero against Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Check out the list on [CoinMarketCap](https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/monero/#markets) and choose the option that suits you best.

## **How do I buy Monero (XMR) with fiat?**

– [Kraken](https://kraken.com/) (USD and EUR): old-school, decent exchange. They might require your documents for verification and approval of your account.
– [LocalMonero](https://localmonero.co/): peer-to-peer exchange. They have pretty much everything as a payment method and they support hundreds of fiat options.

## **How can I quickly exchange my Monero (XMR) for Bitcoin (BTC)?**

There are multiple ways to exchange your Monero for Bitcoin, but first of all, I’d like to remind you that if you really want to do your part for Monero, one of the simplest ways is to **get in touch with your merchant/service provider and request for it to accept Monero directly as payment.** Ask the service provider to visit the [official website](https://getmonero.org/) and our communication channels if he or she needs help with system integration.

That being said, the community has been recommending two services in particular, [XMR.TO](https://xmr.to/) and [MorphToken](https://www.morphtoken.com/). These services are only recommendations and are operated by entities outside the control of the Monero Project. Be diligent.

## **How do I mine Monero? And other mining questions.**

The correct place to ask questions and discuss the Monero mining scene is in the dedicated subreddit r/MoneroMining. That being said, you can find a list of pools and available mining software in the [GetMonero.org](https://getmonero.org/get-started/mining/) website.

# 2. Wallet: CLI & GUI

## **Why I can’t see my balance? Where is my XMR?**

Before any action there are two things to check:

1. Are you using the latest available version of the wallet? A new version is released roughly every 6 months, so make sure you’re using the current release (compare the release on [GetMonero.org](https://getmonero.org/downloads/) with your wallet’s version on `Settings`, under `Debug info`).
2. Is your wallet fully synchronized? If it isn’t, wait the sync to complete.

Because Monero is different from Bitcoin, wallet synchronization is not instant. The software needs to synchronize the blockchain and use your private keys to identify your transactions. Check in the lower left corner (GUI) if the wallet is synchronized.

**You can’t send transactions and your balance might be wrong or unavailable if the wallet is not synced with the network**. So please wait.

If this is not a sufficient answer for your case and you’re looking for more information, please see this answer on [StackExchange](https://monero.stackexchange.com/questions/6640/i-am-missing-not-seeing-a-transaction-to-in-the-gui-zero-balance).

## **How do I upgrade my wallet to the newest version?**

This question is beautifully answered on [StackExchange](https://monero.stackexchange.com/questions/7991/how-do-i-upgrade-my-software-to-the-newest-version).

## **Why does it take so long to sync the wallet [for the first time]?**

You have decided to use Monero’s wallet and run a local node. Congratulations! You have chosen the safest and most secure option for your privacy, but unfortunately this has an initial cost. The first reason for the slowness is that you will need to download the entire blockchain, which is considerably heavy (+70 GB) and constantly growing. There are technologies being implemented in Monero to slow this growth, however it is inevitable to make this initial download to run a full node. Consider syncing to a device that has an SSD instead of an HDD, as this greatly impacts the speed of synchronization.

Now that the blockchain is on your computer, the next time you run the wallet you only need to download new blocks, which should take seconds or minutes (depending on how often you use the wallet).

## **I don’t want to download the blockchain, how can I skip that?**

The way to skip downloading the blockchain is connecting your wallet to a public remote node. You can follow [this guide](https://getmonero.org/resources/user-guides/remote_node_gui.html) on how to set it up. You can find a list of public remote nodes on [MoneroWorld](https://moneroworld.com/#nodes).

*Be advised that when using a public remote node you lose some of your privacy. A public remote node is able to identify your IP and opens up a range for [certain attacks](https://moneroworld.com/) that further diminish your privacy.* ***A remote node can’t see your balance and it can’t spend your XMR.***

## **How do I restore my wallet from the mnemonic seed or from the keys?**

To restore your wallet with the 25 word mnemonic seed, please see [this guide](https://getmonero.org/resources/user-guides/restore_account.html).

To restore your wallet with your keys, please see [this guide](https://getmonero.org/resources/user-guides/restore_from_keys.html).

# 3. Wallet: Ledger

## **How do I generate a Ledger Monero Wallet with the GUI or CLI?**

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange. Check [this page](https://monero.stackexchange.com/questions/9901/how-do-i-generate-a-ledger-monero-wallet-with-the-gui-monero-wallet-gui) for the GUI instructions, and [this page](https://monero.stackexchange.com/questions/8503/how-do-i-generate-a-ledger-monero-wallet-with-the-cli-monero-wallet-cli) for the CLI instructions.

# 4. Wallet: Trezor

## **How do I generate a Trezor Monero Wallet with the GUI or CLI?**

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange. Check [this page](https://monero.stackexchange.com/questions/11437/how-do-i-generate-a-trezor-monero-wallet-with-the-gui-monero-wallet-gui) for the GUI instructions, and [this page](https://monero.stackexchange.com/questions/11353/how-do-i-generate-a-trezor-monero-wallet-with-the-cli-monero-wallet-cli) for the CLI instructions.

# 5. Nodes

## **How can my local node become a public remote node?**

If you want to support other Monero users by making your node public, you can [follow the instructions on MoneroWorld](https://moneroworld.com/#contribute), under the section *”How To Include Your Node On Moneroworld”*.

## **How can I connect my node via Tor?**

This question is beautifully answered on [StackExchange](https://monero.stackexchange.com/questions/467/running-a-full-node-without-revealing-my-home-ip-address).

  1. As I understand, the block reward will be 0.6 XMR from May 2022 onwards.
And the block time will be kept at 2 minutes?

So in 2149 when the 21 millionth bitcoin is mined there will be roughly 37 million monero

How set in stone is this?
    Could future updates change this?

  2. I’m trying to access my Monero wallet on a MacBook Pro using ledger. I updated my Monero software, ledger firmware, ledger software, Mac update, and when I try and access my Monero wallet with my ledger I get a “Device not found” message immediately after I enter my password. What is the issue and how do I resolve? I only have the 24 seed to restore and it asks for a 25 word seed. Any help would be appreciative. Thanks!

  3. Are atomic swaps two way ? like if I have XMR I can swap for BTC, or if I have BTC I can swap for XMR ?

Also is there anything on the btc blockchain side that would indicate that a swap happened ?

  4. Hey y’all. I’ve been passively watching Monero for around 4 or 5 years now and I think I’m finally going to buy in soon after I saw the latest dip this month.

I was wondering what the reason for the dip was. Is it because of the associated of monero with the latest pipeline ransomeware attack?

    Thanks I’m advance

  5. I am currently learning about all things crypto, and started investing a month ago. Recently XMR caught my attention. Isn’t this coin exactly what Bitcoin was supposed to be? I don’t get why this isn’t more populair. Wel, I know I’m DCA and holding for the long term.

  6. I run monerod on a server. I get some messages in the log file:

    monerod[5329]: 2021-05-28 12:28:27.114 I Host 1.2.3.4 blocked.
    monerod[5329]: 2021-05-28 12:40:10.818 I Host 5.6.7.8 unblocked.
    monerod[5329]: 2021-05-28 12:48:20.671 I Host 9.10.11.12 blocked.

(real IPs censored, but I don’t recognize the IPs, they are some random machines on the internet)
What causes this? Is it a problem?

  7. So i bought my first monero this week (on binance), downloaded cake wallet and whitelisted the adress to it on binance. Three days have passed and when i go to withdrawals my wallet adress is still greyed out. There is no error message, just not possible to withdraw.

Is this a binance thing that they are not allowing transfers to wallet of monero?

Should i sell them again and rebuy at Kraken and then transfer to wallet?

    Thank you

  8. Please forgive my ignorance. I’m pretty new to using tails and crypto in general. I would like to put anonymous XMR on my tails wallet (I plan on installing Monero GUI). How can I get funds from CB (I have BTC, ETH, and LTC) to my Monero GUI wallet? I would like to be able to use XMR through tails. I appreciate any help y’all can offer.

  9. # Is it a good idea to use Monero as a deposit?

I think about to put my cash as a student which is around 200€ per month in Monero and not to a bank where it is visible to government and it can be locked by bank.

What do you think about it? Is it safe for the future?

  10. # Can governments force/ban/stop (decentralized) exchanges in the trade of privacy coins?

Hi guys, *(I’m new here – first thread – so please be gentle)*

**I like to start a discussion on Monero and privacy coins in general, wether they are viable/immortal or not.**

What is your opinion, are privacy coins viable/immortal? Can the government stop trade in privacy coins if they really wanted to? What if privacy coins become illegal worldwide? Is it possible to host decentralised exhanges on onion websites?

*This thread is for informational purposes only. I don’t condone any criminal activity. Don’t ever break the law.*

  11. Hi people how do I buy monero with full anonymity ?
The way I thinked today is Skrill – buy btc – send to wallet – then swap BTC to monero.
Os there any other way I could buy monero with cards visa/MasterCard ?
Without showing my id or verifing things would be perfect.
    Thanks 🙂

  12. Is there a way we can be sure monero blockchain is decentralized without anyone ever to be able to control it from within?

Since no one can see monero transactions, if by any chance there is a flaw in the system, where the developer can for example magically create more tokens to sell, nobody will ever find out right? Really curious, explanation would be greatly appreciated.

  13. Even though monero is private by default, you can still kind of deprivatize it, but keep the ability for only you to send transactions. You can give your private view key and it deprivatizes all of your transactions.
This may be a problem, because exchanges can instead of just not accept monero, only accept withdraw and deposit with addresses with private keys that they know and that aren’t involved in “””bad””” deals.
    Maybe I’m getting something wrong.

  14. I’m in a country that requires exchanges to KYC. If I plan to create an account on Kucoin and not KYC, would it save me a future headache if I use a VPN with a dedicated IP address when accessing Kucoin? If so what country should I set my VPN to?

  15. Hi Guys,
I know the market is iffy but in general, are supposed to be trading or accumulating?
And sell (hopefully at the top) and buy as much Monero as possible during bear market?
    Thanks!

  16. Ring signature question.

I understand that when a transaction is made your signature is mixed in with a bunch of signatures that have previously appeared on the blockchain but surely the first time your signature appears it won’t have previously appeared on the blockchain so the transaction will have obviously come from you?

  17. Let’s say if someone used the Monero GUI without Tor/VPN and sent or received something, what measures could the person take in order to make the existing balance anonymous again? Create a new wallet and send it to that, meaning having to reset the seed phrase of ledger wallet or just creating a “new address” in the existing account and transfering it to that address? Or what precedure would you suggest? And do you always have to use tor/vpn when the wallet is open or just if you’re sending a transaction?

  18. Is it somehow possible to make a bitcoin address for a fundraising campaign, – so that it’s obvious to everyone how much is payed, – but that automatically atomic-swaps to Monero, so that the receivers still have their privacy?

  19.

After seeing [this](https://twitter.com/RabinTofsla/status/1396624709718986752?s=20) funny post today

I’ll though I would share the Monero Scene on Twitter, it’s starting to get confident but the ethereum basically dominates and of course bitcoin is always there.

  20. I love the idea of monero but I’m super hesitant about learning and buying after the first thing I signed up for was caught up in a big scandal! Anyway, hopefully I’ll get my first XMR this week by either trade some BTC on CakeWallet or use local monero on tor browser to find a reputable seller.

  21. Is the goal of monero to eventually stabilize. If so wouldn’t it need to be widely accepted. AMD for it to be widely accepted it will lose its privacy with an exchange. How does the majority of the public access monero while maintaining anonymity, eaisly, affordably, safely etc. Doesnt popular exchanges like kraken ruin the of anonymity because you have to give them info to acquire Monero.

  23. Currently using XMrig and a pool to mine XMR. With the GUI wallet and the blockchain downloaded to my computer, how long would it take to mine any amount of XMR by myself?

  24. I have a very basic question: when I create multiple addresses, where are they stored? Locally in my wallet or on the blockchain?

I am asking in case I lose my wallet-file and I recover from the seed. Thanks. 🙂

  25. Thoughts on Secret Network, Privacy oriented Defi, etc…?

Hi, I’m preety new in the comunity
and I was wondering what is the general feeling around alternative
privacy projects such as Secret Network or similar things with anonymous
    smart contracts.

What are the counterparty risks, or risks to privacy in general of using the private
tokens on these chains? Does anyone see them as a threat to Monero’s
market cap or adoption? What are the flaws or the advantages of these
networks compared against Monero? (Aanalogous to the comparison between
    bitcoin and ethereum I guess)

To me it seems to drift away from the no nonsense private digital cash
niche that Monero occupies, but I wanted to hear your peoples thought

    Best regards!

  26. when I load the official Monero Wallet GUI, it appears to be running a full Monero node in the background, is that the case? Why do I need to run all this? I just wanted to have a Monero wallet address I could use for mining. Can I close the wallet app and just run the miner against the wallet’s address?

  27. i’m super confused. so up til now i’ve been using a trezor model t with monero gui on my macbook air. everything going smooth except i have been using a remote node since the macbook air doesnt have enough space for the local node.

so i realize i have an old lenovo thinkpad that is never used. i format it, download monero gui. my plan is to use this to be able to have a local node and increase my privacy. i download monero gui and choose advanced mode. i’m assuming i then choose “restore wallet from keys or mnemonic seed”. but then when i choose that, it asks me for a 25 word mnemonic seed, which i dont have? i only have the 12 word mnemonic seed from my trezor. how do use my existing wallet on this new computer?

  28. As soon as the customer sends you the XMR, the transaction is broadcast to the Monero network. Funds will appear in your wallet in 4-12 minutes after the first confirmation. If a privacy coin appears with a quicker speed, it’ll wipe Monero out in terms of regular transactions – however, it could still have a great place in terms of big online transactions that are privacy sensitive. Please tell me I’m wrong and explain why for others to benefit from too.
